Square One

Square One is the moment of reflection after the crisis. The main character (in this case the one that started the misery) has ended the relationship and started a new life, far away from the past he has destroyed. But then loneliness takes over, the good memories rise to the surface and regrets sinks in. Staring in the cold distance, the storyteller comes to the conclusion that he has sacrificed a lot.
Being one of the divorce songs, this is the counterpart of Out Here In The Cold. The temperature is the same, but the way it is experienced is totally different. Based around an A minor 9th riff, there is a distinct Americana feel, emphasized by the chorus in a soft bluegrass alternate bass style. The echoing lap steel contributes to the eerie, lonely-feeling atmosphere, as do the phased Hammond organ and windy samples in the instrumental section. The Mellotron flutes add some organic sixties flavor.

Lyrics
I’m driving underneath the stars
Another eighty miles to go
The silence’s tearing me apart
And time is passing slow
And my restless mind is wandering
To the things that I’ve done wrong
Cause I really made a mess
Of the place where I belong
I chose to leave it all behind me
Hide from each and every one
I went where one else would find me
Feels like I’m on the run
But my restless mind keeps wandering
To the times I shared with you
Memories we made together
Seem to shine like they are new
I want to tell you that I’m sorry
I want to start all over new
I want to go back to square one
I want to come back home to you
Staring in the distance
At the mountains and the snow
Loneliness creeps up inside me
But I know where to go
‘Cause my restless mind keeps wandering
To the times I shared with you
Now that I am on my own
I don’t know how to get through
I want to tell you that I’m sorry
I want to start all over new
I want to go back to square one
I want to come back home to you
