Take Me as I Am

‘Take Me As I Am’ gaat over de worsteling om als verlegen artiest het podium te pakken. “is dat wat ik te vertellen, te brengen heb, wel interessant genoeg? Vindt iedereen het wel mooi?” Dat soort vragen spelen door je hoofd als performer in spé. Ik heb me jarenlang comfortabel gevoeld als sideman, en dat doe ik nog steeds: ik begeleid graag anderen, ik draag er met mijn talenten graag aan bij dat zij optimaal kunnen schitteren.

Maar toch: je schrijft, je creëert je eigen muziek, je eigen teksten, die niet altijd zijn in te passen in de context van een ander. Op een gegeven moment dacht ik “Fok it, ze nemen me maar zoals ik ben: Take Me As I Am.

Het liedje kreeg een extra lading toen ik op THISSFEST 2013 speelde, op de zaterdag die ook International Coming Out Day was. Na de show kwamen er twee dames op me af die pas sinds kort voor hun lesbische relatie waren uitgekomen en die allebei tot tranen geroerd waren. En dat raakte mij dan weer diep.

‘Take Me As I Am’ is a song about the struggle every to-be performing artists knows: “are my songs good enough, is what I have to say interesting enough to listen to?” I have been comfortable as a side man for many years – and I still am: I am happy to share my talents for others to take the spotlight.

But I write my own music, my own lyrics, and they’re not always suitable in the context of other artists. So one day I said to myself: “F$%k it, take me as I am!”

The song received a deeper layer when I performed on THISSFEST in 2013, on the Saturday that was International Coming Out Day. After the show two ladies came up to me, who only recently had made their lesbian relationship public. They were both deeply touched by the songs, which touched me deeply in return.
